Shey Palace is a former royal residence near Leh, set above the Indus Valley with monastery structures, old walls, and broad views over fields and mountains. It is a useful first-day or half-day stop because it is close to Leh and pairs easily with Thiksey, Stakna, and Hemis. Travellers come for the palace setting, cultural context, photography, and a gentler introduction to Ladakh's heritage before longer drives. The landscape around Shey also shows the softer agricultural side of the valley.
